Last weekend we had Le Global Bandstand, this week the Tour de France arrived in Kent, and the finish of stage 1 was in Canterbury.
The day started with the parade of the giants, and this was the first outing for Whitstable’s giant; Sam (AKA Big Dick).
While the other giants from around Kent and Europe had marching bands, dancers or people dressed up in traditional costume, guess what Whitstable’s giant had? Bugger all!!
Now I know it’s early day’s for our giant, and enthusiasm has not been that great from some areas, but I just hope the giant committee can rustle up something of interest to support him on his journey.
Anyway, the day was all about hundreds of very fit guys on two wheels merrily peddling at speeds of around 32mph for hours on end.
Now we are used to carnival processions of a few local Queens or Princesses and the odd marching majorettes, and very little else. Well the bloody French sure showed us how it can be done (admittedly at a price) with some of the most spectacular customised vehicles and mobile advertisements that I have ever seen.
I waited for hours for the riders to hit Canterbury, then whooooosh they had passed and it was all over!
Well done to all the people involved in the organisation of this fantastic event, and to all those attending who behaved themselves impeccably. Even the weather was on our side.
