Continuing with the Whitstable Oyster Festival. On Thursday we had the Grotter Day, where children and their families were asked to come along to Reeves Beach to construct as many Grotter’s as possible out of old oyster shells. Animate were on hand to offer advice and aid in the lighting of the Grotter’s at dusk.
Thursday evening was also the time for the Blessing of the Waters on Reeves Beach. Reverend Simon Tillotson was on hand to get his feet (and hands) wet in this ceremony. A service was held on shore, before the public were invited to process down to the waters edge for the blessing itself.
You may recognise the Grotter builder in the photograph as Nev, Whitstable’s own Oyster Eating Champion. His Grotter was the biggest and most elaborate of the many constructions. It even had a keep, moat and flags decorating his efforts. Nice one Nev!

Friday saw the arrival of the BBC South East Today Team, including; Geoff Clark and Beverley Thompson at the harbour for an outdoor broadcast of their “Deckchair Tour 2007”. To keep those not interested in getting their faces on the TV, we were entertained by Jim Leverton in fine voice on the South Quay
Saturday 28th saw the harbour come alive as everybody who didn’t want the commercialism of the Regatta flocked there for Harbour Day.
There was something for everyone ranging from the Historical Diving Society, doing a demonstration in the Royal Navy Tank, to The Fabulous Fezheads were there doing what comes naturally to people with too much spare time on their hands.
Bob Le-Roi was on hand throughout the day, keeping everyone informed on the PA.
The weather held fine, and thousands of people enjoyed a lovely time around a working harbour.
Coming soon (arrived) to a web site near you; Art Hewitt (Festival Co-ordinator) as you have never seen him before!
